PLACES TO VISIT IN OJEN (Malaga, Spain)
Church of La Encarnacion
The church of the Encarnación was built over an old mosque in the 16th century, the minaret of which survives as the present church spire and bell-tower. Inside there is a single nave with a beautifully decorated timber ceiling. The church also houses a statue of Ojen’s beheaded saint.
El Molino Museum and Gallery
This museum is situated on the site of the last aguardiente factory in Ojén. The ancient mill can be worked by waterpower or electricity, and produced one of the most valued products of the locality: olive oil. Now open to the public and sometimes used by artists to display their works.
Fuente de los Chorros
This typical Andalusian fountain was erected in Ojen to symbolise the village’s plentiful supply of water. The water flows from here through channels that date from Moorish times to irrigate the land below the village, just as it was used hundreds of years ago. The water is a must to sample; untreated but pure spring water, favoured by the locals for drinking.
Surrounding Countryside
The Mountains around Ojén are heavily forested with oak, pine, cork trees and an area of pinsapo trees; a rare species of Mediterranean pine. There are numerous animal species here too, such as the mountain goat, the royal eagle and the royal owl. One can also see in the area genets, mongoose, polecats and a host of smaller animals. The flora here is especially rich too, with an abundance of medicinal plants, herbs and wild flowers. Along the river Almadán and in the area known as the Charco de las Viñas one can spot interesting reptiles and amphibians. The Mountain tracks are very popular with hikers and mountain bikers. Particular care must be taken in the hot dry months as forest fires are easily started by a disguarded cigarette or people who decide to have a barbeque.
Museo de Vino
This museum is on the site of the old Anis distillery. A guided tour with wine tasting can be arranged. After sampling there is a wide selection of Malaga wines to be purchased. Also there is a large range of gifts that make ideal presents or mementos of your visit.
C/Carrera, 39. Open every day in summer from 11 to 3 pm and 6 to 10 pm, and in winter from 11 to 3 pm and 4 to 8 pm. Tel: 952 881 453
La Picina de Ojen (swimming pool)
The Ojen swimming pool is a real treat in the summer months. Often mistaken for a private country club, this facility can be used for just a couple of Euros a day; sunbeds extra. Beside the pool is a very nice bar and restaurant serving meals into the late evening. The food is very good, as are the prices. Drinks are normal village prices.
Easy access is from the Marbella to Coin road, via the Mirador (viewing point) from where it can be seen, situated just below. Car parking available.
OJEN RESTAURANT GUIDE ……

Restaurante Lorente
Calle Junquitto No.22 Tel: (0034) 952 881174

Restaurante Lorente
Restaurante Lorente has a typical rustic feel, with a chimney burning away in the cooler months. It’s always spotlessly clean and food of the highest quality cooked to perfection. All meats are grilled on a wood fuelled barbeque giving it a wonderful flavour. For fish lovers the fish and seafood casserole is to be highly recommended, and is always served by the proud chef personally. The house wine is recommended highly. *****
Restaurante Fogon De Flore
Calle Carrera No. 10 Tel: (0034) 952 881461
Restaurante Fogon De Flore is a very homely and intimate restaurant, interestingly decorated with a fine collection of paintings china and antique furniture. The owner (the chef) is a very warm and cheerful lady and is always welcoming. The food is not typically Spanish, but very tasty, with many dishes garnished with exquisite sauces. The chef even has a mild curry on the menu; well worth a visit. ****
Blas Pizzeria (Blas Factory)
Calle Carrera 15 Tel: (0034) 952 881 115
As the name suggests Blas specialises in pizzas; to take away or eat in house. Having said this he definately has the largest menu in Ojen from hamburgers to entrecote steaks. The prices are very good, as is the quality. You will not be sitting in plush surroundings and you may hear Blas mixing a bit of music as you eat (he is a latent DJ), but for a quick snack and an amusing experience of chaos, it can be recommended. ***
Restaurante El Castillo

Restaurante El Castillo
Calle Carettera
This fine restaurant is famous for its quality meat, paella and fish dishes. There is a nice patio for outdoor dining, and is indeed the restaurant of choice for Antonio Banderas when he rides his Harley Davidson to Ojen. Very friendly service and highly recommended. ****
