Semana Santa (Easter) 2009
Friday 3rd April through to Sunday 12th April.
Each day there are a number of processions consisting of extremely heavy floats, which are carried from the church in villages, or from the church to the cathedral in cities, and then back to the church of origin. There are normally two floats; one carrying Christ, and the other carrying the Virgin Mary.
The most spectacular processions are in Andalucia where the procession can take several hours. The floats are extremely heavy and some men even carry the float in bare feet in order to endure the pain and suffering as did Christ. This is a deeply moving experience and one not to be missed!
Personally speaking the procession in Ojen is particularly spectacular. The whole village comes to a stand still as the float passes through, with residents lining the streets.
