Ojen (Marbella, Malaga, Spain)

Whats happening in Ojen? The Winter? if you blinked you would have missed it! We have had an amazingly dry winter, unlike the last 3 years. Christmas we were still sitting out on terraces in the daytime enjoying the sun, New year we partied all night in the square, entertainment and champagne supplied courtesy of our fantastic council, our thanks to the Mayor. Talking of the council, there is a great programme of improvements to the infrastructure with many of the side streets leading to the square being nicely block paved and all new drainage and mains installed  below. This not only is making a marked improvement to our beautiful village, but is also giving work to many of the young locals that may otherwise have found themselves unemployed. We are now looking forward to our Easter celebrations (Semana Santa) and the concerts planned through the Summer, my favourite being the 3 day Ojenando festival on the 6th, 7th and 8th of July. I will announce the acts as soon as they have been confirmed. For any of you who have not visited Ojen yet, give it a try, you wont be disappointed.

Semana Santa (Easter) in Ojen (Marbella, Malaga, Spain)

Tonight at 8.00pm (Thursday April 1st) starting from our beautiful church in the centre of the village square (La Plaza) is the ceremonial candle-lit procession where the statue of our beloved virgin is slowly paraded through the main streets of Ojen to be worshipped by the emotional crowds that line the streets each year for this important event. Friday 2nd sees a similar procession again starting at our church at 8.00pm and the final procession is on Sunday 4th starting around mid-day. After the processions take a meal in one of Ojens fine restaurants or just a beer and a tapa in one of the terrace bars that surround the square.

Semana Santa (Easter) in Ojen

Ojen enjoyed four glorious days of sunshine for its Easter celebrations (Semana Santa), not so comfortable for the men carrying Christ and the Virgin Mary, but this is a deeply religous and sacrificial ritual. The whole village turned out in style each day to celebrate this important event which features high on the Ojen festival calender. The terraces were packed in the square and the holiday was enjoyed by the locals and the visitors equally.
